Red Flag Warning in Effect for Guam, Refrain from Outdoor Burning

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office has issued a red flag warning for Guam, in effect until 5 p.m. this afternoon. A red flag warning means critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. Sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 30 mph are expected through this afternoon.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

No Tsunami Threat to Marianas from Philippines Earthquake

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 that struck 67 km WNW of Cabra, Philippines, with a depth of 11.0 km, at 7:05 a.m. (ChST).

As advised by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, there is no tsunami threat to Guam or the Northern Mariana Islands at this time. This will be the only statement issued unless additional information is received.

Hazardous Surf and Seas in Effect for the Marianas; Inexperienced Swimmers Advised to Stay Out of the Water

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office has the following advisories in effect:   

high surf advisory is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 p.m. Saturday. Hazardous surf of 7 to 9 feet is expected along north facing reefs and beaches.

Two COVID-19-related Fatalities Reported 

Today, the Joint Information Center was notified of two (2) COVID-19-related fatalities:

  • The 336th COVID-19-related fatality occurred at the Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC) on March 9, 2022. The patient was a 74-year-old male, unvaccinated, who had underlying health conditions and tested positive on February 17.

335th COVID-19-related Fatality Reported 

Today, the Joint Information Center was notified that Guam’s 335th COVID-19-related fatality occurred at the Guam Memorial Hospital on March 8, 2022. The patient was a 78-year-old male, fully vaccinated without a booster, who had underlying health conditions and tested positive on February 28.

JIC RELEASE NO. 984 - Three COVID-19-related Fatalities Reported; Cumulative COVID-19 Test Results: 295 New Cases, 28 Hospitalized

Three COVID-19-related Fatalities Reported 

Today, the Joint Information Center was notified of three (3) COVID-19-related fatalities: 

  • The 332nd COVID-19-related fatality occurred at the Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC) on March 3, 2022. The patient was an 83-year-old female, fully vaccinated with a booster, who had underlying health conditions and tested positive on March 3.

JIC RELEASE NO. 983 - COVID-19 Test Results to be Reported on Tuesday; 28 Hospitalized; UPDATE: COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic and Community Testing Schedule

Special note: The Joint Information Center release will not include COVID-19 test results today, as community test sites were not available on Sunday, March 6, 2021. Additional results from other clinics will be reported on Tuesday, March 8, 2022.
