JIC RELEASE NO. 1009 - ​ Preliminary COVID-19 Test Results: 19 New Cases, Seven Hospitalized

Preliminary COVID-19 Test Results: 19 New Cases Reported

Today, the Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) reported a preliminary case count of 19 new cases of COVID-19 from 197 specimens analyzed on April 1, 2022. To date, there have been a total of 47,330 officially reported cases, 349 deaths, 832 cases in active isolation, and 46,149 not in active isolation.

Tropical Disturbance to Pass South of Guam with No Direct Threat; Showery Weekend Expected

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office continues to monitor a tropical disturbance, Invest Area 94W, expected to track slowly westward, passing south of Guam in the coming days and pass just north of Yap by early next week.  

For Guam and the Northern Marianas, breezy and showery conditions are expected today as 94W passes south, with potential for scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. Through Saturday and Sunday, moderate to fresh trade winds persist, keeping a threat of a high risk of rip currents.

Three COVID-19-related Fatalities Reported

Today, the Joint Information Center was notified of three COVID-19-related fatalities:

 
  • The 347th COVID-19-related fatality occurred at the Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC) on March 15, 2022. The patient was a 78-year-old male, unvaccinated, who had underlying health conditions and tested positive on March 7.

High Risk of Rip Currents in Effect Through Late Saturday Night

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a high risk of rip currents, in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through late Saturday night. Dangerous rip currents are expected along east facing reefs. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from the shore into deeper water. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous conditions. If caught in a rip current, do not swim against the current.

Two COVID-19-related Fatalities Reported

Today, the Joint Information Center was notified of two COVID-19-related fatalities:

 
  • The 345th COVID-19-related fatality occurred at the Guam Regional Medical City on March 25, 2022. The patient was a 41-year-old male, unvaccinated, who had underlying health conditions and tested positive on March 19.

344th COVID-19-related Fatality Reported

Today, the Joint Information Center was notified that Guam’s 344th COVID-19-related fatality occurred at the Guam Memorial Hospital on March 29, 2022. The patient was a 76-year-old female, fully vaccinated with a booster, who had underlying health conditions and tested positive on March 11.

JIC RELEASE NO. 1005 - ​ 343rd COVID-19-related Fatality Reported; COVID-19 Test Results: 59 New Cases, 17 Hospitalized; Changes Made to COVID-19 Vaccination and Testing Schedule

343rd COVID-19-related Fatality Reported

Today, the Joint Information Center was notified that Guam’s 343rd COVID-19-related fatality occurred at the U.S. Naval Hospital Guam (USNH) on March 29, 2022. The patient was an 87-year-old male, fully vaccinated with a booster, who had underlying health conditions and tested positive on March 28.

GHS/OCD Encourages Applicants for the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program; Application Deadline Extended to May 9

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) announced on February 9, 2022 that Guam is expected to receive $6 million in Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP). This funding is available for Government of Guam entities and private non-profit organizations to address mitigation measures and infrastructural improvements. The application period opened on February 7, 2022. The original deadline for Sub-applications was on March 9, 2022 and is now being extended to May 9, 2022.

Today, the Joint Information Center was notified of two COVID-19-related fatalities: 

 
  • The 341st COVID-19-related fatality was pronounced dead on arrival at the Guam Memorial Hospital (GMH) on March 25, 2022. The patient was a 78-year-old female, unvaccinated, who tested positive on March 26.
