JIC RELEASE NO. 1136 - COVID-19 Test Results: 41 New Cases, 12 Hospitalized; Updates to COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic Schedule; Additional COVID-19 Updates

No Tsunami Threat to Marianas from Taiwan Earthquake

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.2 that occurred 86 km E of Yujing, Taiwan, with a depth of 10.0 km, at 4:44 p.m. (ChST).

As advised by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, there is no tsunami threat to Guam or the Northern Mariana Islands at this time.

This will be the final statement issued by GHS/OCD unless additional information is received.

Flood Advisory in Effect for Guam; Practice Caution in Heavy Rain

The National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Forecast Office Guam has issued a flood advisory for Guam until 7:30 p.m. Urban and small stream flooding from excessive rainfall is expected. Between 0.6 and 1.2 inches of rain has already fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are expected. 

Some locations that will experience flooding include Dededo, Tamuning, Yigo, Mangilao, Chalan Pago-Ordot, Barrigada, Yona, Hagatna Heights, Andersen AFB, Talofofo, Mongmong-Toto-Maite, Sinajana, Inarajan, Asan, Merizo, Piti, Santa Rita and Umatac.

Locally Heavy Rainfall Possible Through Tuesday; Prepare to Take Action if Flooding Occurs

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a hydrologic outlook for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan. A tropical disturbance is expected to develop within the eastern sector of the monsoon trough just to the west of Agrihan by late Sunday.

Amounts between 2 and 4 inches of rainfall, with locally heavier amounts in excess of 4 to 6 inches is possible for the Marianas through Tuesday.

High Surf Advisory in Effect; Inexperienced Swimmers Advised to Stay Out of the Water

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a high surf advisory, in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 a.m. Monday. Large breaking waves of 9 to 11 feet are expected for north and west facing reefs of the Marianas. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion are expected.

Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a high surf advisory for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan, in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday. Hazardous surf of 6 to 9 feet are expected for west and north facing reefs of the Marianas. Dangerous swimming conditions and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion are expected.
