JIC RELEASE NO. 14 - Governor Signs Executive Order No. 2023-03; Mandatory Evacuation of Coastal Areas Ordered

Governor Lou Leon Guerrero has issued Executive Order No. 2023-03, relative to the mandatory evacuation of low-lying coastal areas of Guam in anticipation of Typhoon Mawar. 

It is anticipated that Typhoon Mawar will be a high Category 3 typhoon, with sustained winds of 125mph. Typhoon Mawar is further intensifying, with the possibility of advancing to a Category 4 typhoon or a supertyphoon. Further, Guam is in the direct path of Typhoon Mawar and it is anticipated our island will be directly hit or a very near-miss.

JIC Release No. 12 - Typhoon Mawar Update; Emergency Shelters Open at 8 A.M.

Officials continue to monitor Typhoon Mawar as it makes its gradual approach toward the Marianas. As of 4 a.m., Mawar was located 10.6 degrees north latitude and 146.9 degrees east longitude, about 245 miles southeast of Guam and 320 miles south-southeast of Saipan. It is moving north-northwest at 7 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph. 

JIC Release No. 11 - Additional Shelters to Open; Airline Update; GRMC Update

Additional Shelters to Open in Southern Villages:

The Guam Department of Education (GDOE) has added three additional Emergency Shelters that will open at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, May 23, 2023 to receive residents that need shelter from the storm. The complete list is as follows:


Northern

  • AsTumbo Elementary School

  • Maria A. Ulloa Elementary School

  • Machananao Elementary School

  • Upi Elementary School 

  • Wettengel Elementary School

JIC Release No. 9 - Typhoon Mawar Update; JRM Update; DPHSS Update; GRTA Update; GSWA Update

JRM Update:  
All region installations remain in TCCOR 2 and a Typhoon Warning is now in effect for Guam. All DoDEA schools and Child and Youth Programs are canceled for Tuesday, May 23. All Navy Base Guam gates will be closed at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23. All Andersen gates will be closed at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23. The time for gate closure is subject to change based on weather conditions. For specific installation services, please consult the respective Facebook pages for the most recent storm updates and closures. 

JIC RELEASE NO. 8 - Typhoon Mawar Update: Typhoon Warning in Effect; Remain Out of the Water; GMH Updates; Price Gouging Prohibited; Utilities Update; Visitor Industry Update

The National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Forecast Office Guam continues to monitor Typhoon Mawar as it continues to strengthen and slowly track toward the Marianas. 

JIC Release No. 7 - Emergency Shelters to Open Tuesday Morning at 8 AM

The Guam Department of Education (GDOE) is preparing to open eight (8) emergency shelters 8 A.M. Tuesday, May 23. Emergency shelters will NOT be opened until 8 A.M. tomorrow. Do not attempt to go to any emergency shelter until then.  

The following emergency shelters open at 8 a.m. Tuesday, May 23:

North

  • AsTumbo Elementary School

  • Maria A. Ulloa Elementary School

  • Machananao Elementary School

  • Upi Elementary School 

JIC RELEASE NO. 6 - Typhoon Mawar Update; Governor Leon Guerrero Signs Executive Order No. 2023-02; DPW Update; DPHSS Update; GBHWC Information; GAA Closed

Officials continue to monitor what is now Typhoon Mawar, which has strengthened to typhoon status overnight. As of 5 a.m., Mawar was located 8.5 degrees north latitude and 148.1 degrees east longitude, about 265 miles west-northwest of Chuuk, 410 miles south-southeast of Guam, and 485 miles south-southeast of Saipan. It is moving north-northwest at 8 mph with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph. 

Guam remains in Condition of Readiness (COR) 2 at this time. The Government of Guam, with the exception of essential services, will remain closed until COR 4 is announced.
