Press Release – Thunderstorm Advisory in Effect for Guam International Airport

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a Thunderstorm Advisory in effect for the Guam International Airport until 12:00 p.m.

Thunderstorms are possible or are occurring within 20 nautical miles of the airport.

The offices of Guam Homeland Security/Civil Defense remind residents:

·       Be alert and take precautions as required. These storms have been producing occasional lightning.

 

Press Release – No Tsunami Threat to Guam from Vanuatu Islands Earthquake

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 that occurred in the Vanuatu Islands at 11:47 a.m.  

As advised by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, there is no tsunami threat to Guam or the Marianas at this time. This will be the final statement issued by GHS/OCD unless additional information is received.

Press Release – Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense Announce Notice of Funding Opportunity for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program-National Security Supplemental (NSGP-NSS)

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) announced the Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) received through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) fiscal year (FY) 2024 Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP)-National Security Supplemental (NSS).

Press Release- High Surf Advisory, Small Craft Advisory, Rip Current Statement in Effect

The National Weather Service (NWS), Weather Forecast Office Guam issued a High Surf Advisory, Small Craft Advisory, and Rip Current Statement in effect until 6:00pm Wednesday evening.

High Surf Advisory

Waves of 7 to 10 feet along north facing reefs. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions with localized beach erosion.

Rip Current Statement

High Risk of rip currents along north and east facing shores.

Small Craft Advisory

No Tsunami Threat to Marianas from California Earthquake

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 that occurred near the northern coast of California at 4:44am.  

 As advised by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, there is no tsunami threat to Guam or the Marianas at this time. This will be the final statement issued by GHS/OCD unless additional information is received.

High Risk of Rip Current in Effect through early Wednesday

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a Rip Current Statement in effect for East facing reefs of Guam until 500am Wednesday morning.

Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore and into deep water

The offices of Guam Homeland Security/Civil Defense remind residents:
  • Swim near a lifeguard.
  • If caught in a rip current, relax and float.
  • Don`t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline.
  • If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
