Preliminary information and numbers submitted on September 21, 2018 as part of the request for a Major Disaster Declaration did not qualify Guam for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Individual Assistance program. The denial meant that federal grant money will not be available to assist residents’ homes damaged by Typhoon Mangkhut.
Governor Eddie Baza Calvo has expressed his intent to file an appeal requesting another review for Individual Assistance.
The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) continue to work with local and federal partners to move forward with another round of additional damage assessments to individual homes.
On Tuesday, November 13, 2018, teams from GHS/OCD, the Mayor’s Council of Guam, the American Red Cross, and FEMA will once again conduct damage assessments in residential areas. It is important to note that not each individual home will be assessed. The information gathered is meant to supplement Governor Calvo’s appeal.
The public can expect to see officials throughout the island conducting assessments.
