Small Craft Advisory in Effect through Friday; Prepare to Take Action if Flooding Occurs

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a small craft advisory for the coastal waters of Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan, in effect from 6 a.m. Tuesday through Friday afternoon.

Southwest winds of 15 to 25 knots are expected to move into Guam and Rota coastal waters Tuesday morning, then spread north into Tinian and Saipan waters Tuesday night. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid boating in hazardous conditions.

A flash flood watch remains in effect for Guam and Rota through late Tuesday night. Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible. Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone areas. Higher rainfalls starting tonight, with amounts between 3 and 5 inches, with locally heavier amounts in excess of 4 to 6 inches, are possible through late Tuesday night.

Residents and visitors are advised to take the following precautionary actions:
  • Clear drainage areas and unblock clogged storm drains in your area;
  • Stay up to date with the latest information;
  • If driving, be alert for low visibilities and slippery roads in heavy rain;
  • Slow down where water is ponding on the road;
  • Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down, and 2 feet of water can sweep your vehicle away;
  • Do not camp, park, or hike along streams, rivers, and creeks during heavy rainfall. These areas can flood quickly and with little warning.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) advise the community to practice caution while traveling in rainy conditions, driving below the speed limit and allowing enough braking distance between vehicles.
