Press Release - Tropical Storm Sanvu Continues West-Northwest; Heavy Rain and Gusty Winds Remain a Possibility

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office continues to monitor Tropical Storm Sanvu. As of 7 a.m., Sanvu was located 10.4 degrees north latitude and 155.1 degrees east longitude, 300 miles northeast of Chuuk, 710 miles east-southeast of Saipan, and 730 miles east-southeast of Guam, moving west-northwest at 5 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. Tropical Storm Sanvu is expected to maintain this general course and speed over the next 24 hours.

Latest model guidance have Sanvu weakening as it slowly approaches the southern Marianas, dissipating as a significant tropical cyclone well east of the islands. However, as the tropical storm moves westward, it is likely to encounter less upper-level wind shear. This, along with a compact and near-stationary storm, indicates this system could hold its intensity a bit longer, allowing it to possibly move through the Marianas as a depression, increasing the expected rainfall amounts across the islands early to mid-week next week.

Although weakening for Sanvu is likely, the community is reminded the situation can change quickly and is advised to:

·  Stay up to date with the latest information through the weekend;
·  Be prepared to take action, if warranted, if the potential for heavy rain and gusty winds increases;
·  Be alert for potential advisories for hazardous seas and small craft
