Necessary for UXO Extraction

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) were notified by Guam Fire Dispatch of an unexploded ordnance (UXO) found along the construction site on Ypao Road in Tumon. The UXO is described to be a possible mortar round, approximately 16 inches in length and 4 inches in diameter.

The Guam Police Department (GPD), Guam Fire Department (GFD), and an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit responded to the scene and after careful assessment, have deemed it necessary to conduct a Render Safe Procedure (RSP) and detonate the UXO in place.

The RSP is scheduled for Friday, August 18, at 10 a.m.

For the safety of the public in the surrounding area and responders involved, the following areas have been notified and are required to be evacuated during the time of detonation:

All residence and businesses within 250 yards of the UXO
All business fronting the lower Ypao Road and Route 14 Tumon towards the Pacific Islands Club

Residences and businesses outside of the 250 yard, up to to 1,000 yard radius are required to shelter in place until the all clear is given.

Traffic will not be permitted through the following roadways from 0900-1100:

Ypao Rd. from Seventh Day Adventist Clinic to Route 14 (Pale San Vitores Drive)
Route 14 by Bishop Flores Loop and Route 14 by J.F.K. Hill
Carmen Memorial Drive, Paseo De Oro Road, and Congressman Paul D. Palting Loop Route 14B Ypao Road.

The community is reminded to practice the “3Rs of Explosive Safety” when any UXO is encountered:

Recognize - when you may have encountered a munition and that munitions are dangerous.
Retreat - do not approach, touch, move, or disturb it, but carefully leave the area.
Report - call 911 and advise of what you saw and where you saw it.

Wildfire

Regularly clean the roof and gutters.
Maintain an area approximately 30’ away from you home that is free of anything that will burn, such as wood piles, dried leaves, newspapers and other brush.
Connect garden hoses long enough to reach any area of the home and fill garbage cans, tubs, or other large containers with water.
Review your homeowner's insurance policy and also prepare/update a list of your home's contents.

Fire Weather

Turn on your TV/radio. You’ll get the latest weather updates and emergency instructions.
Know where to go. If you are ordered to evacuate, know the route to take and have plan of where you will go. Check-in with your friends and family.
Keep your car fueled, in good condition, and stocked with emergency supplies and a change of clothes.

Drought

Conserve water

Take shorter showers.

Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving.
Run the washer less frequently and only when you have a full load.
Water your lawn less frequently and do so when the temperature is cooler in the early morning or late evening.
When you run the tap to heat or cool water, keep a pitcher to store the water and use it to water plants.
Avoid washing your car.

Practice fire prevention

Don't set off fireworks when conditions are dry.
Deposit cigarette butts in the proper receptacle to avoid starting a
Pour water over camp fires and backyard fire pits to ensure they are completely out before leaving them unattended.

Follow directions from local officials. If there are restrictions on water usage, be sure to heed them.
