NWS Issue Short Term Forecast; Heavy Rain,Gusty Winds Expected; High Risk of Rip Currents Remain

The National Weather Service (NWS), Weather Forecast Office Guam issued a short term forecast for Guam.

Through 12:00 p.m. today, portions of Guam and coastal waters can expect brief moderate to heavy rain and gusty winds. Wind may gust 25 mph to 30 mph as showers pass.

Drivers should be alert for sudden brief showers with gusty winds that will lower visibility. Boaters should watch for wind gusts over 25 knots and briefly higher seas.

A high rip current risk remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan on east facing reefs of the Mariana Islands until Friday.

Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Inexperienced swimmers should not enter the water. Never swim alone. Swim near a lifeguard. If you are caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don’t swim against the current. Swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind the community to avoid east facing reefs and beaches until hazardous conditions subside. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags, and signs. Rip currents are life threatening.
