GHS/OCD, JRM, NBG, and AAFB to Conduct Routine Testing of Advanced Warning Systems

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), Joint Region Marianas (JRM), U.S. Naval Base Guam (NBG), and Andersen Air Force Base (AAFB) will conduct routine testing of the vital communication and advance warning system sirens, respectively, on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, starting at 3:15 p.m.

GHS/OCD will test the nineteen (19) All Hazards Alert Warning System (AHAWS) sirens in conjunction with JRM, NBG, and AAFB monthly routine testing of the “Giant Voice (GV)” sirens.

High Risk of Rip Currents and Small Craft Advisory Remain in Effect

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office has the following advisories in effect:

A high risk of rip currents remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through Tuesday afternoon along east facing reefs. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from the shore into deeper water. If caught in a rip current, do not swim against the current. Swim in a direction following the shoreline, face the shore and call or wave for help.  

GHS/OCD Hosts Upcoming Training Opportunities

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), in conjunction with the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX), will host the following free training opportunities at the GHS/OCD facility in Agana Heights:

Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from the shore into deeper water. If caught in a rip current, do not swim against the current. Swim in a direction following the shoreline, face the shore and call or wave for help.

    Report Positive COVID-19 At-home Test Results to DPHSS

    Report positive COVID-19 at-home and over the counter (OTC) test results to the Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) via email: dphss.surveillance@dphss.guam.gov. You must report your positive result within 24 hours and provide the following information:

    The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office maintains a high risk of rip currents in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through late tonight for east facing reefs. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from the shore into deeper water. If caught in a rip current, do not swim against the current. Swim in a direction following the shoreline, face the shore and call or wave for help.  

    Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to hazardous swimming conditions.

    Earthquake Recorded

    The U.S. Geological Survey recorded an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.0 that struck 82 km ESE of Yigo Village, Guam, with a depth of 10.0 km, at 3:02 p.m. (ChST).

    There were no damages or injuries reported from the earthquake. There is no tsunami threat to the Marianas from the earthquake. 

    Hazardous Surf and Seas Expected; Stay Out of the Water

    The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office has the following advisories in effect:

    Life-threatening swimming conditions can be expected.

    A high surf warning is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 2 p.m. this afternoon along north and west facing reefs. Dangerously large breaking waves of 11 to 16 feet are expected in the surf zone. Breaking waves can sweep people off jetties and docks, and into dangerous seas.

    Hazardous Surf and Seas Expected; Inexperienced Swimmers Should Stay Out of the Water

    The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office has the following advisories in effect:

    Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.

    A high surf advisory is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan from 6 p.m. this evening until 6 p.m. Saturday along north and west facing reefs. Hazardous surf of 9 to 14 feet is expected.
