The U.S. Geological Survey recorded an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.0, and later upgraded to an 8.1, that occurred in the Kermadec Islands region, New Zealand at 5:28 a.m. (ChST), Friday, March 5, 2021, with a depth of 10.0 km.
As advised by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, based on all available data, there is NO tsunami threat to Guam, Rota, Tinian, or Saipan from this earthquake although some minor seal level fluctuations may occur.
The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense, working with partners from the National Weather Service, will continue to monitor events in the region. This will be the final statement issued unless additional information is received.
