335th COVID-19-related Fatality Reported

Today, the Joint Information Center was notified that Guam’s 335th COVID-19-related fatality occurred at the Guam Memorial Hospital on March 8, 2022. The patient was a 78-year-old male, fully vaccinated without a booster, who had underlying health conditions and tested positive on February 28.

“To his family and friends who mourn his passing, Jeff, Josh, and I extend our deepest condolences and sympathies. We hope that in this time of grieving and sadness, you’re able to find healing,” said Governor Lou Leon Guerrero. “While COVID-19 has robbed us of too many loved ones, we will not be defeated. We have the tools to beat this virus. Let us continue to use them to push forward in recovery.”

COVID-19 Test Results: 163 New Cases of COVID-19

Today, the Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) reported 163 new cases of COVID-19 from 818 specimens analyzed on March 8, 2022. 31 of the cases reported today are through the Department of Defense. To date, there have been a total of 46,000 officially reported cases, 335 deaths, 1,622 cases in active isolation, and 44,043 not in active isolation.

SPECIAL NOTE: Based on today's data, if we were to compare two (2) hypothetical populations of 100,000 people each, vaccinated versus unvaccinated, there would be 16 vaccinated people hospitalized for COVID-19 compared to 127 unvaccinated people hospitalized for COVID-19. The risk of being hospitalized for COVID-19 is about 8 times higher for the unvaccinated as compared to the vaccinated. *Estimated population is based on DPHSS Immunization Program analysis of 2020 Census data. Updates are expected pending further Census 2020 data breakdown.

Mangilao mAb Treatment Center

Monoclonal antibody therapy (mAb) treatment is available at the mAb Treatment Center at the Mangilao Senior Citizens Center. Therapeutic services are available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m Monday through Saturday. Patients must receive a referral from a physician to qualify for treatment at this center. To schedule an appointment, call (671) 988-4627. Individuals are encouraged to schedule within 10 days of when symptoms started for best results.

Guam COVID-19 Vaccination Update

As of March 8, 2022, a total of 135,301 of Guam’s eligible population (residents 5 years and older) is fully vaccinated. This total includes 13,524 residents 12 – 17 years old. 7,585 residents 5 – 11 years old received their first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech two dose series. 5,689 residents 5 – 11 years old have completed their two-dose series. An additional 70 residents received their booster shots and a total of 55,746 booster shots have been administered to eligible residents since September 29, 2021.

Regularly clean the roof and gutters.
Maintain an area approximately 30’ away from you home that is free of anything that will burn, such as wood piles, dried leaves, newspapers and other brush.
Connect garden hoses long enough to reach any area of the home and fill garbage cans, tubs, or other large containers with water.

Know where to go. If you are ordered to evacuate, know the route to take and have plan of where you will go. Check-in with your friends and family.
Keep your car fueled, in good condition, and stocked with emergency supplies and a change of clothes.

Drought

Conserve water

Take shorter showers.

Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving.
Run the washer less frequently and only when you have a full load.
Water your lawn less frequently and do so when the temperature is cooler in the early morning or late evening.
When you run the tap to heat or cool water, keep a pitcher to store the water and use it to water plants.
Avoid washing your car.

Practice fire prevention

Don't set off fireworks when conditions are dry.
Deposit cigarette butts in the proper receptacle to avoid starting a
