JIC Release No. 36 - Visitor Industry Prepares

Typhoon Mangkhut Update: Visitor industry prepares for typhoon

The Joint Information Center (JIC) is working with our tourism industry partners to make our visitors feel comfortable, safe, and informed as Typhoon Mangkhut moves closer to the Marianas.

With Guam in Condition of Readiness (COR) 1 and the onset of damaging winds to begin early this afternoon, visitors are strongly urged to stay indoors and shelter-in-place until COR4 is announced. The Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB) and Guam Hotel and Restaurant Association (GHRA) strongly recommend to hotels to enforce shelter-in-place policies as part of their safety and security protocols.

During an emergency, hotels should already be providing regular updates, airline updates and translation services to their guests.

Airport operations to cease as typhoon approaches

Effective 12:15 p.m. all inbound/ outbound airport operations at the A.B. Won Pat Guam International Airport will cease. United 196, which is scheduled to depart at 12:05 p.m. to Narita, will be the last flight out for today.

United urges customers to check the latest status of their flights at united.com or by calling United Reservations at 1-800-UNITED-1 (1-800-864-8331).

Additionally, all airline customers are encouraged to contact their respective airlines for any further changes. For the most updated flight schedules, visit www.guamairport.com.

TYPHOON MANGKHUT UPDATE: Okkodo High School and Upi Elementary to open as additional shelters

Due to the need to house additional persons, especially in the northern area, plans are underway to open the Okkodo High School (OHS) and Upi Elementary School (UES) as emergency shelters by 9 a.m. today.

Okkodo High School has the capacity to hold 700 people. Upi Elementary can hold up to 300 people. To meet the needs of our community, the Guam Department of Education, working through the Emergency Operations Center, began coordinating with the Department of Public Works (DPW) and Mayors Council of Guam.

The shelter at Juan M. Guerrero Elementary School (JMGES) will close by 9 a.m. and shelter operations will move from JMGES to OHS. Individuals seeking shelter SHOULD NOT report to JMGES, and should instead report directly to shelters or work with village mayors if they need transportation.

Adding Okkodo High School and Upi Elementary brings the availableshelter count total to 10.

The designated storm shelters that residents should proceed to are:

Primary Northern Shelters Capacity Shelter Population % Capacity
1. Okkodo High School 700 0 0%
2 Upi Elementary School 300 0 0%
  Primary Central Shelters
3 Carbullido Elementary 180 0 0%
4. George Washington High 700 32 5%
  Primary Southern Shelters
5. M.U. Lujan Elementary 150 41 27%
6. Merizo Elementary 100 3 3%
7. Inarajan Middle School 100 12 12%
8. Talofofo Elementary 200 36 18%
9. Harry S. Truman Elementary 100 3 3%
  Secondary Central Shelters
10. Ordot/Chalan Pago Elementary 150 11 7%

Storm Shelter updates will be released as necessary throughout the day.

Those seeking shelter and have no way of getting to a designated storm shelter are advised to contact or visit their village mayor’s office to coordinate transportation services for pick up and drop off.
