EYES TURNED TO CNMI
Governor Calvo has assigned Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense to take the lead on Government of Guam efforts to assist Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands once they are able to assess their damage and what needs they have.
“Our brothers and sisters to the north experienced catastrophic conditions,” Governor Calvo stated. “We won’t know the results of Super Typhoon Yutu until assessments are done but we know there will be extensive damage. Guam will assist however we can.”
As of 2 a.m., winds of at least 165 mph with gusts, were battering into Saipan and Tinian. We continue to get reports of roofs being torn off homes, shutters being ripped off windows, and doors getting blown in.
Lt. Governor Ray Tenorio said the people of the Marianas are resilient because of the culture of unity and compassion. “We have heard reports of people hiding in their bathrooms, seeking shelter under their beds, or even their cars. We pray that wherever they are, they can withstand this storm as Super Typhoon Yutu moves away. The people of Guam stand ready help.”
