The National Weather Service (NWS) – Guam Weather Forecast Office advises an extremely dangerous situation is developing for Saipan and Tinian as strongest winds of Super Typhoon Yutu will begin to impact them in the next hour. Over the next several hours, Yutu will bring catastrophic damage to both Saipan and Tinian.
As of 10 p.m., Yutu was located 14.7 degrees north latitude and 146.3 degrees east longitude, about 130 miles northeast of Guam, 50 miles southeast of Saipan and 50 miles east-southeast of Tinian. Yutu is moving northwest at 12 mph with maximum sustained winds of 165 mph.
The eyewall of Super Typhoon Yutu will hit Saipan and Tinian before midnight. A typhoon warning remains in effect for Rota, Tinian and Saipan meaning typhoon force conditions are expected or occurring through late Thursday morning.
“We continue to pray for our brothers and sisters in the Northern Mariana Islands as the brunt of the storm impacts them. This storm has affected all of us and we look forward to seeing how we can help one another recover as One Marianas,” Governor Calvo stated.
“As the storm continues to travel near our island homes, let us pray for the safety of our brothers and sisters in the Marianas. May God watch over us all,” said Lieutenant Governor Ray Tenorio.
A tropical storm warning remains in effect for Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands Alamagan, Pagan, and Agrihan. Tropical storm conditions are expected for Guam late tonight through Thursday evening.
Guam is still in Condition of Readiness (COR) 1. Gusts of 46 mph up to 60 mph are still expected for Guam between midnight through early morning Thursday.
