High Surf Advisory in Effect; High Risk of Rip Currents Expected

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a high surf advisory in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 p.m. Wednesday. Large breaking waves of 7 to 10 feet along west facing reefs are expected, resulting in a high risk of rip currents.

Impacts expected include dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion.

Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim parallel to the shore and back toward the beach when possible. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Rip currents are life threatening.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind the community to avoid hazardous seas, until conditions subside. Heed the advice of officials, lifeguards, beach patrol flags, and signs.
