The National Weather Service (NWS), Guam Weather Forecast Office advised a monsoon surge is producing hazardous surf in the Marianas.
A high surf advisory remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 p.m. this evening. A high surf advisory means high surf will affect beaches in the advisory area, producing localized beach erosion and dangerous swimming conditions. Hazardous surf of 8 to 10 feet will continue along south and west facing reefs through tonight.
The community is advised to avoid venturing out along south and west facing reefs and beaches. Large breaking waves can knock people down and cause serious injuries.
Strong rip currents will be life-threatening. If caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to swim directly against a rip current.
The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) advise residents and visitors to avoid hazardous seas, especially south and west facing reefs and beaches, until conditions subside. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags, and signs.
