Guam Supports Recovery Efforts in CNMI – Donation Drive Extended to November 21, 2018 - GHS OCD

Recovery efforts continue in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) after Super Typhoon Yutu left behind its destruction two weeks ago. The government of Guam continues to work with federal and military partners, as well as with local agencies to assist Saipan and Tinian with their recovery efforts.

CNMI Donation Drive Ongoing
The whole community is encouraged to donate to those in need in the CNMI. In-kind donations for Saipan and Tinian are accepted at the Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense facility in Agana Heights. The donation drive has been extended until November 21, 2018 The hours of operation are:

Monday – Friday: 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Saturdays: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Sundays and Holidays: CLOSED

The following items are being accepted at this time:

Canned Goods
Rice
Flashlights and Lanterns
Batteries
Tarp
Duct Tape
Hygiene products
Clothing
Bedding

The whole community - individuals, families, government agencies, and other groups and organizations are encouraged to provide their donations before or by November 21, 2018.

Guam Support Continues

Airport
The Guam International Airport Authority (GIAA) sent two airfield electricians since November 1, 2018 to assist in the recovery of field and terminal electrical systems at the Saipan International Airport. The Saipan International Airport is open for incoming military aircrafts, humanitarian aid, returning residents and outgoing flights. They GIAA electricians will also travel to Tinian to assess and assist with repair of Tinian International Airport’s electrical systems.

Power
The Guam Power Authority (GPA) currently has 33 personnel in CNMI working with the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation (CUC) on power restoration. GPA’s personnel include: engineers, electricians, equipment operators, safety officers and many others.

DPW
The Guam Department of Public Works (DPW) is sending 2 engineers to Saipan this weekend to assess the damages to traffic signals across the island. 4 additional DPW personnel are on standby to perform repairs on the traffic signals once assessments are done.

Guam National Guard
In late October, approximately 130 Guam Guardsmen with the Army Guard’s 1224th Engineer Support Company were sent to Saipan to assist with recovery efforts to include support of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and FEMA as the lead federal agency in support of debris clearing missions in CNMI. The National Guard also sent heavy equipment and assets including: 18 vehicles, including high-mobility excavators, 10-ton dump-trucks, and light-medium practical vehicles. Accompanying the equipment were 22 heavy equipment operators to provide the capability to move and clean large amounts of debris more efficiently.

X Flooding is a temporary overflowing of water onto land that is normally dry. Flooding may happen with only a few inches of water, or it may cover a house to the rooftop. There are many possible causes of floods including heavy rain, coastal storms and storm surge, waterway overflow from being blocked with debris, or overflow of levees, dams, or waste water systems. Flooding can occur slowly over many days or happen very quickly with little or no warning, called flash floods.

Wildfire

Regularly clean the roof and gutters.
Maintain an area approximately 30’ away from you home that is free of anything that will burn, such as wood piles, dried leaves, newspapers and other brush.
Connect garden hoses long enough to reach any area of the home and fill garbage cans, tubs, or other large containers with water.
Review your homeowner's insurance policy and also prepare/update a list of your home's contents.

Fire Weather

Turn on your TV/radio. You’ll get the latest weather updates and emergency instructions.
Know where to go. If you are ordered to evacuate, know the route to take and have plan of where you will go. Check-in with your friends and family.
Keep your car fueled, in good condition, and stocked with emergency supplies and a change of clothes.

Drought

Conserve water

Take shorter showers.

Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving.
Run the washer less frequently and only when you have a full load.
Water your lawn less frequently and do so when the temperature is cooler in the early morning or late evening.
When you run the tap to heat or cool water, keep a pitcher to store the water and use it to water plants.
Avoid washing your car.

Practice fire prevention

Don't set off fireworks when conditions are dry.
Deposit cigarette butts in the proper receptacle to avoid starting a
Pour water over camp fires and backyard fire pits to ensure they are completely out before leaving them unattended.

Follow directions from local officials. If there are restrictions on water usage, be sure to heed them.

Typhoons/Hurricanes are massive storm systems that form over the water and move toward land. Threats from typhoons/hurricanes include high winds, heavy rainfall, storm surge, coastal and inland flooding, and rip currents.

“Hurricanes” form in the Atlantic Northeast Pacific region and “Typhoons” form in the Northwest Pacific Region. These large storms are call cyclones in other parts of the world.
