Guam has until November 4, 2018 to appeal the denial of the request for Individual Assistance.
Preliminary information and numbers submitted on September 21, 2018 as part of the request for a Major Disaster Declaration did not qualify Guam for the FEMA’s Individual Assistance program. The denial means that federal grant money will not be available to assist residents’ homes damaged by Typhoon Mangkhut.
“I have directed Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense to work with their local and federal partners to gather more data to help us meet the threshold necessary to get help for our people,” Governor Calvo stated. “While we are grateful for the Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation request having been approved, we must pursue the request for individuals and homes to also get the support they need.”
The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) worked closely with FEMA officials immediately after Typhoon Mangkhut on preliminary damage assessments to homes and businesses. Guam has since been granted Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation from President Donald Trump.
The Guam Housing Corporation and Guam Housing and Urban Renewal Authority continue to work with individuals whose homes were destroyed. The Office of the Governor is working closely with other Government and non-profit organizations to return those with damaged homes to normalcy.
The Government of Guam continues to work with various groups to include Guam Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD), the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and others with long term recovery efforts for Typhoon Mangkhut.
