GovGuam Holds Donation Drive for CNMI

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) have been directed to lead donation efforts on behalf of the Government of Guam to support those affected by Super Typhoon Yutu in the CNMI.

In-kind donations will be accepted at the GHS/OCD facility in Agana Heights beginning Tuesday, October 30, 2018 – Saturday, November 10, 2018. The hours of operation are:

Monday – Friday: 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Saturdays: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Sundays and Holidays: CLOSED

As part of the relief effort, GHS/OCD, working with partner agencies will be outsourcing for containers to be shipped and are available to assist in transporting goods to Saipan and Tinian as needed.

The following items are being accepted at this time:

Canned Goods
Rice
Flashlights and Lanterns
Batteries
Tarp

Duct Tape *Please note bottled water is not being accepted at GHS/OCD this time.

*Monetary donations are not being accepted at GHS/OCD at this time. For those wanting to make monetary donations, the following locations are accepting:

Guam Department of Education Coin Drive – monetary donations can be made at GDOE school offices
Agat Mayor’s Office is hosting a separate money drive for Tinian
All Bank of Guam branches are accepting cash or check contributions
Ayuda Foundation with BankPacific are collecting monetary donations
Prutehi Litekyan and Håya Foundation are accepting monetary donations online at bit.ly/YutuRelief, under the memo "typhoon relief efforts"

Items that are not in boxes are still able to be accepted and will be boxed and consolidated at the GHS/OCD facility. Requested items may change throughout the donation period based on the requests and needs of the people in CNMI. Stay up to date with the latest information regarding the donation drive at:

GovGuam Agencies
Government of Guam agencies are requested to consolidate all donated items within their respective agencies and deliver them in bulk to GHS/OCD. All Guam Fire Department stations are also collecting donations to be delivered in bulk to GHS/OCD.

Other Groups/Organizations
GHS/OCD is able to assist other groups such as faith-based organizations, non-profit organizations, or any others that are facilitating donation drives by receiving their donations in bulk at GHS/OCD to be shipped to CNMI.

Families or Individuals
GHS/OCD is open to the public. Any that want to donate the appropriate items are asked to drop them to the GHS/OCD facility during the hours of operation provided.

X Flooding is a temporary overflowing of water onto land that is normally dry. Flooding may happen with only a few inches of water, or it may cover a house to the rooftop. There are many possible causes of floods including heavy rain, coastal storms and storm surge, waterway overflow from being blocked with debris, or overflow of levees, dams, or waste water systems. Flooding can occur slowly over many days or happen very quickly with little or no warning, called flash floods.

Wildfire

Regularly clean the roof and gutters.
Maintain an area approximately 30’ away from you home that is free of anything that will burn, such as wood piles, dried leaves, newspapers and other brush.
Connect garden hoses long enough to reach any area of the home and fill garbage cans, tubs, or other large containers with water.
Review your homeowner's insurance policy and also prepare/update a list of your home's contents.

Fire Weather

Turn on your TV/radio. You’ll get the latest weather updates and emergency instructions.
Know where to go. If you are ordered to evacuate, know the route to take and have plan of where you will go. Check-in with your friends and family.
Keep your car fueled, in good condition, and stocked with emergency supplies and a change of clothes.

Drought

Conserve water

Take shorter showers.

Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving.
Run the washer less frequently and only when you have a full load.
Water your lawn less frequently and do so when the temperature is cooler in the early morning or late evening.
When you run the tap to heat or cool water, keep a pitcher to store the water and use it to water plants.
Avoid washing your car.

Practice fire prevention

Don't set off fireworks when conditions are dry.
Deposit cigarette butts in the proper receptacle to avoid starting a
Pour water over camp fires and backyard fire pits to ensure they are completely out before leaving them unattended.

Follow directions from local officials. If there are restrictions on water usage, be sure to heed them.

Typhoons/Hurricanes are massive storm systems that form over the water and move toward land. Threats from typhoons/hurricanes include high winds, heavy rainfall, storm surge, coastal and inland flooding, and rip currents.

“Hurricanes” form in the Atlantic Northeast Pacific region and “Typhoons” form in the Northwest Pacific Region. These large storms are call cyclones in other parts of the world.
