DISASTER PREPAREDNESS FACT SHEETS
The Offices of Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) will host contests throughout NPM and encourage the school communities to participate:
Elementary School Poster Contest
WHO MAY JOIN - Any elementary student enrolled in any Guam based school.
Categories:
1) K-5 and 1st Grade
2) 2nd and 3rd Grade
3) 4th and 5th Grade
POSTER SPECIFICATIONS
· Overall dimensions shall be no smaller than Legal Size (8.5’’ x 14’’) and no larger than Tabloid (11’’x17’’) on paper, poster or illustration board.
· Stenciled, traced, computer generated or commercially manufactured stick-on lettering or graphics are prohibited.
· Posters must incorporate the theme of “What does your emergency plan look like?”
o Posters should have special emphasis on how you and your family can prepare for a disaster (i.e. What do you do before a disaster, how do you communicate before and during a disaster, etc.).
o Parents/guardians are encouraged to visit ready.gov (http://www.ready.gov/make-a-
o Parents/guardians should not complete the poster board for the children, rather, help them formulate ideas.
· Posters will be judged on originality, the focus on the emergency preparedness theme, and the creativity of the poster.
IDENTIFICATION – All entries must include the following information: Name, Age, Grade, School, and Art Instructor/Teacher Name (Required information must be placed at the back of poster).
DEADLINE – All entries must be submitted to Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense in Agana Heights no later than 5pm, Friday, September 20, 2019. Any entry submitted after this day will not be considered eligible.
Middle School Poetry Contest
WHO MAY JOIN - Any middle school student enrolled in any Guam based school.
POEM GUIDELINES AND SPECIFICATIONS
· Write a one page poem about emergency/disaster preparedness or explain your emergency plan in the event of a natural disaster.
· Formatting:
o 1 inch margins
o 12 point Times New Roman font
o Double Spaced
o Include in the top right hand corner:
1. Individual’s name
2. School name
3. Grade
4. Title of poem
· Poems must incorporate the NPM theme of emergency preparedness.
o Students, Parents and guardians are encouraged to visit ready.gov (http://www.ready.gov/make-a-
o Parents/guardians should not complete the poem for the student, rather, help them formulate ideas.
· If information is pulled from a specific source, the source must be cited. Plagiarism of any kind will ensue in disqualification.
· Poems will be judged on originality, the focus on the emergency preparedness theme, and creativity.
IDENTIFICATION – All entries must include the following information: Name, Age, Grade, School, and title of poem (all information should be at the top right corner of the poem).
DEADLINE – All entries must be submitted to Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense in Agana Heights no later than 5pm, Friday, September 20, 2019. Any entry submitted after this day will not be considered eligible. Entries can be delivered to the Guam Homeland Security Office in Agana Heights or emailed to jenna.g.blas@ghs.guam.gov.
High School Video Contest
WHO MAY JOIN - Any high school student enrolled in any Guam based school.
VIDEO GUIDELINES AND SPECIFICATIONS
· An individual or a group of no more than 5 may submit a digital video.
· Digital video submissions should not exceed 3 minutes (180 seconds).
· All entries must begin or end with a full-screen slide that includes the following information:
o Individual names and grades of those involved in the video.
o School name
o Title of video
· Digital videos must incorporate the theme of “What does your emergency plan look like?”
o Videos should have special emphasis on how you and your family can prepare for a disaster (i.e. What do you do before a disaster, how do you communicate before and during a disaster, etc.).

WINNERS – Winners for each category will be contacted, recognized and presented prizes at the 2019 National Preparedness Month Grand Finale at the Agana Shopping Center scheduled for September 28, 2019.
All entries will become property of Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense and may appear in future public outreach publications.
