The Guam National Guard, 94th Civil Support Team (CST) and the Guam Fire Department (GFD) Hazardous Materials (HazMat) unit conducted air monitoring tests at various sites throughout the island yesterday through this morning. No volcanic gases or other hazards were detected. Test results will be provided to the Guam Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Public Health and Social Services for further analysis.
U.S. National Weather Service (NWS), Weather Forecast Office Guam advised on Wednesday that the haze from Mount Kilauea in Hawaii was expected to decrease today into the weekend as wetter weather moved in from the east.
Though the haze is not expected to cause widespread health problems, those with respiratory issues should limit outdoor activities until the haze dissipates.
Out of an abundance of caution, the Department of Public Health and Social Services would like to remind all residents, especially people with asthma, chronic bronchitis, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), or other pre-existing respiratory conditions, to minimize time outdoors and avoid being outdoors where haze is seen. If being outdoors is necessary, consider wearing a face mask. Ensure that medications are on hand and readily available in case they need to be taken.
Symptoms to watch for: Wheezing, Shortness of Breath, Difficulty Breathing, Chest Heaviness, Lightheadedness, Dizziness. If symptoms are not relieved by usual medication, seek medical attention. Contact your physician for any questions or concerns.
Although no hazards were detected, there is no current special weather statement from the NWS, residents and visitors are reminded that Mount Kilauea is still an active volcano. The haze may return so it is important for the community to stay up to date with the latest information.
The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), working with NWS and all stakeholders, will continue to monitor the situation and provide the community with updates. Residents and visitors can monitor the latest advisory information through the following sites:
