The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), following a worldwide initiative through the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), invite the community to celebrate “World Tsunami Awareness Day” (WTAD) on Sunday, November 5, 2023, to promote a global culture of tsunami awareness.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) along with the Mariana Regional Fusion Center (MRFC), continue to receive reports of local telephone numbers receiving suspicious messages or reported phishing scams from local, domestic and unusual or unexpected international area codes. Most recently, reports identified suspicious calls related to non-existent Amazon orders for electronics.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 that struck 171 km WSW of Merizo Village, Guam, with a depth of 35.0 km, at 10:04 a.m. (ChST).

As advised by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, there is no tsunami threat to the Marianas from the earthquake. There were no major damages or injuries for Guam reported from the earthquake.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.2 that struck 146 km E of Yigo Village, Guam, with a depth of 10.0 km, at 6:11 p.m. (ChST).

As advised by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, there is no tsunami threat to the Marianas from the earthquake. There were no major damages or injuries for Guam reported from the earthquake.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers debris removal mission moves forward as contractors completed cleanup from residential rights of way in the villages of Barrigada, Chalan Pago Ordot, Mangilao, Mongmong-Toto-Maite and Yona. 

The USACE mission conducts separation and removal of eligible typhoon related debris from residential properties. Teams go street by street through each village collecting everything from construction and demolition waste to vegetative debris from rights of way until the entire village has been cleared. 

Guam will soon take part in the world’s largest earthquake drill, the Great ShakeOut. On Thursday, October 19, 2023 at 10:19 a.m. (ChST), participants will practice the earthquake response procedure; “Drop, Cover and Hold On” from wherever they are. The drill will last for one minute.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office has the following advisories in effect:

A high surf advisory remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 5 p.m. Sunday. Large breaking waves of 7 to 9 feet are expected. Remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.
